The education system in our country is not for the faint-hearted. Most kids despise education in our country because of the constant pressure that they are put through right from their childhood. But then again, it has always been this way. The 3-hour exam that we take decides our fate. Exams are the one thing that solely decides our future and our capabilities. Basically, it all comes down to our retention power. How much information are we able to cram up in our brains in the last few hours or the last day before the exam? Once we vomit it on the paper, it’s done and dusted, and we completely forget about it.
Does anyone care about the things we learn outside of our syllabus? The values we learn from our teachers and our parents? The experience we gain over the years traveling or reading? The sad truth is NO. Nobody cares about these things unless there is an official stamp on it which is approved by our education system. So much of our life is decided on how many marks we score in these exams. Scary if you really think about it, isn’t it?
We all are familiar with the famous dialogue from the movie 3 Idiots which completely summarises our education system: “Life is a race … if you don’t run fast … you will be like a broken andaa” There have been numerous incidents of student suicides in our country because they could not take the pressure of the rat race anymore. And let me remind you, these kids aren’t dumb. They aren’t kids who cannot survive in the real world or be a good citizen. They are kids who simply weren’t the “toppers” of their class. Because they weren’t able to score 90 or 95% of marks in academics. Unfortunately, that is how our system is designed.
It is a good thing to imbibe a constructive competitive spirit in kids. But recently, a Hyderabad school took things to a whole new (or low) level by putting up a billboard of the nursery, LKG, UKG, and class 1 toppers!
The incident came to light when a twitter user shared the image with a caption that pretty much sums up the ridiculousness of the situation. The tweet, which went viral in no time, garnered heavy public backlash for obvious reasons.
According to the viral post, Priya Bharathi High School in Kothapet, Hyderabad put up a billboard with a photo of toppers in them. The nursery toppers list had 10 kids, the LKG list had 14 names, and 11 kids under the UKG topper list. The only thing that comes to my mind is, ‘What were the school authorities thinking when they decided to make a billboard of these kids?’ Just looking at their innocent faces, they haven’t probably even learned how to spell ‘topper’. There couldn’t have been a better way to squish the self-esteem of these toddlers before they even began high-school. It’s hard to wrap your head around the whole thing, and social media agrees.
Here’s what the netizens had to say about the viral post.
Looking at this post, I’m sure many of us will be glad that we graduated pre-school way earlier than these kids. Clearly, things are very different for preschoolers now where they enter the rat race from as young as the nursery. Childhood is no more about enjoying or having fun. But don’t our children deserve a childhood of fun and peace which they could fondly remember? What do you have to say about the viral post? We would love to hear your thoughts
