Dark Matter

Made in collaboration with the Science Gallery London. This sci-fi art documentary looks at the unseen presence of black women in science while channelling the spirit of Vera Rubin, the woman who discovered Dark Matter. Directed by Adeyemi Michael.

00:21
there is a dark side to our universe
00:23
most of the cosmos is made of something
00:26
astronomers cannot see at all
00:28
Dark Matter

we ideally what we all dream of is that
01:23
when you do it when you ask questions of
01:26
in science when you ask questions of
01:28
nature you will get answers that are
01:31
much bigger than what you went out to
01:33
find

01:47
the galaxies are held together by an
01:50
invisible halo of dark time
01:55
we know there is mass there so a better
01:59
a better name might have been the
02:02
missing luminosity that is where is
02:04
where is this matter dark matter is a
02:07
good term unknown matter may be a good
02:10
term but the fact that it’s dark is its
02:12
most prominent characteristic I like
02:15
dark matter and just like in the solar
02:20
system where most of the masses at the
02:22
Sun you expect that as things get
02:24
farther and farther away they orbit more
02:27
slowly and what we found is that these
02:30
stars are going just as rapidly as those
02:32
stars and we’re forced to conclude that
02:34
they’re responding to a gravitational
02:37
field we don’t see and that
02:39
gravitational field must be composed of
02:41
dark matter
