A Week of Outfits: Jamie Erickson

Jamie Erickson runs the Brooklyn café and catering company Poppy’s, which makes arguably the best cookies in the city. But despite her hectic job, her style remains relaxed and casual. “My style has been the same forever,” she says. “If you look back at pictures of me as a teenager, I didn’t go through any trendy phases. There’s so much in my closet that I’ve had for years.” Here, she shares five looks she wears on repeat…

“As soon as I tried on these Loup overalls, I knew I’d live in them. Overalls and jumpsuits are so easy. Also, wearing a bandana in our hair was a signature Poppy’s style when we first opened. It’s my flair! Bandanas are a way to add an accessory to a very simple outfit, and they’re also very child-friendly, versus earrings that kids can pull.”

“I’m a fourth-generation New Yorker. My grandfather was a counterman at the B&H Dairy, a classic kosher restaurant on 2nd Avenue in the East Village. He was there for 40 years. On his retirement day, the New Yorker did an article on him called The CounterMan. Day in, day out, he worked behind the counter and never wanted anything but that. For me, growing up Jewish in New York City, food was my culture for my family and for myself. The art of hospitality and eating good food was in the blood. I called my grandfather Poppy — and named my business after him.”

“Before this, I was the catering manager at City Bakery. When I started my own business, I thought, how am I, this Brooklyn nobody, going to stand out? I had just gotten married and had a really simple wedding. My ‘aha’ moment was, although there are so many caterers out there, if I do something simply and do it well — from the food to the aesthetic to the customer service — maybe it could actually work.”

“I love this Madewell T-shirt and wear it all the time. The material is thin but not see-through. And it’s not too tight; I don’t want one that hugs me, especially when it’s hot in the summer. I wear white clothes year-round and don’t care if they get messy. Going from work to the playground, I stain everything, which is why my sister never lets me borrow anything! And I wear my Birkenstocks almost every day. They’re so comfortable.”

“We all wear Heather Taylor masks at work. Masks have become a real accessory. I always want to support small women-owned businesses. A few others I love are Lemlem for beach cover-ups, Xenia Talor for tableware and Lani Halliday for the best gluten-free cakes and pastries.”

“For a long time, I’ve embraced my grays, but the stress of everything right now has really increased them. Everybody’s struggling in business right now. It’s very real. Catering is the first thing to go and the last thing to come back because no one’s gathering together. I hope we pull through. We’re by no means back to business as usual and I don’t think we will be for a very long time. What’s interesting since COVID is while the café is the absolute smallest part of our business — catering from a business standpoint makes a lot more sense — it’s the part that speaks to my soul and my heart. I love it.”
